    Celebrating International Women's Day 2022

    Mar 04, 2022

The theme for International Women’s Day this year is Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow. Here at Dirty Laundry Vineyard in Summerland, we are supported by a number of amazing women who keep things running smoothly at the winery both on the front end and behind the scenes.

In honour of International Women’s Day, we spoke to two of these women to find out what gender equality means to them, what they have struggled with over the years, and how much they’ve overcome.

    • How long have you been at Dirty Laundry Vineyard and what do you do here?

I am going into my 6th year with Dirty Laundry Vineyard and I work as the Financial Controller.  As the Controller, in a nutshell I am primarily in charge of closely monitoring the winery’s financial health.  I typically maintain, manage and analyze the company’s financial statements, payroll, cash flow and budgets. I then provide these financial statements, cash flow and budgets to our shareholders monthly which is of huge importance, as this assists our shareholders in making sound business decisions. I also ensure the accounting department runs smoothly on a daily basis, along with putting in processes/procedures for inventory control and internal controls.

    • What is your favourite Dirty Laundry wine and what is your favourite Okanagan summer activity?

Anyone who knows me knows that my favourite white wine at DLV is the Reserve Chardonnay, but if I’m in the mood for a red, Hush Red is definitely the winner! As for my favourite summer activity, I would easily say camping with my husband. What better way to enjoy a good glass of Reserve Chardonnay than sitting by a campfire with your better half?

    • What challenges have you faced as a woman in the workplace and how have you overcome them?

This is a good question! I have been in the accounting industry for nearly 25 years, and I can honestly say that I have seen a lot of positive changes for women in the workplace during that time. The biggest challenge would obviously be pay equality between men and women, and making your voice heard. When I first started working in accounting, there was definitely a big discrepancy, which has definitely narrowed over the years, though not completely. I don’t think there was anything in particular that I did to overcome this struggle; it is more of a result of the times changing drastically, and let’s face it, we do live in a world where both women and men need to work to make a living.

    • What advice do you have for women who are interested in working in the wine industry?

First off, I would definitely advise it as, let’s be honest, what better industry is there? I don’t know too many women who don’t enjoy a good glass of wine! On a more serious note though, even if you look at DLV, we could honestly say that 80% of employees are women. If you want to get into the wine industry, just do it! There’s nothing you can’t do, believe in yourself and your abilities. I have worked in many industries within the accounting sector such as construction, non-for-profit, and hospitality, but I have to admit that working in the wine industry truly is my favourite, hands down!

    • How long have you been at Dirty Laundry Vineyard and what do you do here?

I am currently starting my eighth season with Dirty Laundry Vineyard (Yikes). When I started it was a part-time position that quickly morphed into full-time. I did a brief stint managing the Bordello Wine Club whilst a colleague was on maternity leave. After she returned, I became the events co-ordinator and senior staff in the wine whop. Now eight years later with the addition of the Bottom’s Up Saloon and the Red Iron Grill I have settled into the role of Wine Shop Manager.

    • What is your favourite Dirty Laundry wine and what is your favourite Okanagan summer activity?

I do not have one specific favourite wine in the portfolio. The exciting aspect of DLV wines is that they are ever changing and truly becoming something to be proud to be associated with. Summer is the busiest time at Dirty Laundry Vineyard so I would have to say my favorite summertime activity is working. There is so much satisfaction in a season well done no matter what challenges arise.

    • What challenges have you faced as a woman in the workplace and how have you overcome them?

I think we as humans, not just women, have been incredibly challenged during the pandemic. To remain focused and optimistic has been at times very difficult. One reason that I have survived as well as I have is that I am incredibly fortunate to work with AMAZING women.

In any industry, not just the wine industry, you have to establish meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships to truly be successful. To work with women you admire, respect and truly care for creates a work environment that allows for the best kind of individual creativity.
