    Hidden Gem: Our Riesling
Recently, we asked our winemaker Mason Spink which of Dirty Laundry’s award winning wines he thinks could use a spotlight—Right away he said our award-winning Riesling. The 2017 vintage took Gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships and Silver at the Pacific Rim Wine Competition, also in 2017.

But since we don’t like to brag, we’ll just tell you that this wine is delicious: fruit-forward with citrusy notes of lemon-lime and honeydew melon. A mouth-filling honey note finishes the feel and adds balance.

Our Riesling has another marker of quality that Mason loves. It ages well in the bottle, developing characteristic notes of petrol (trust us, it’s a good thing). That means you can buy a bottle today and save it for a special occasion next year.

“I love Riesling, and I love B.C. Riesling especially. When it’s first bottled it has a sharp, green apple note to it, but about a year after it’s in the bottle it develops that petrol-y, kerosene character. But it still has the nice fruit to it, sweetness on the initial palate, and tons of the racy acidity on the finish that just makes your mouth water.”

White wines typically don’t age well, but Riesling is special. Its aging capability is one of the reasons it’s beloved by serious wine aficionados, who normally have bottles of red lining their cellars for years, waiting for the mature expression of the grapes. At Dirty Laundry, we give our Riesling a slow, cool fermentation to allow for the delicate aromas to blossom and make this wine a pleasure to drink.

“Year in, year out, the Riesling is just one of my favourites. It ages so well, in fact, I just had one of our 2012 Rieslings that’s still holding up like gangbusters. With so much acid, it can really hold up quite well.”
